Since the 1500’s and even earlier fruit has been used to represent sex, acting as supplements for their human counterparts. From the forbidden fruit and original sin and biblical tales of man where sexuality was discovered and covered to the paintings of artists like Caravaggio fruits have been causing quite a stir in our subconscious. Even in paintings where fruit is the sole subject our minds find the deeper allusion at play and attribute sensual meanings. As long as advertising as existed producers have understood that sex sells. Employing artists to then use these allusions in their work to commercial sex to sell to consumers. In these series of images, I aim to play on the intertwining of the fruit as an object representing sex and how it has been adapted and pushed by commercial advertising and media in this, our 21st century to sell by using vibrant colors and lighting used in current trends alongside the square format now dubbed the “Instagram square”.
